UNDIAGNOSED
CORONARY ARTERY
DISEASE
Coronary artery disease remains the leading killer globally.
Approximately 25% of patients presenting with first time heart attack have no Standard Modifiable Risk Factors – they are ‘SMuRF-less’. This group of susceptible patients emphasises the need for a new method for earlier detection of the causal disease process.
Atherosclerosis, or the build up of plaque in arteries, begins many years prior to acute cardiac events. Specific changes in inflammatory and redox signalling pathways occur in the arterial wall and currently they can’t be measured from blood samples. Similar pathways also play a role in heart failure.
The challenge has been to measure this in
easily accessible biosamples such as blood.
